BROADCAST ELECTRONICS (BE) SHOWS AT NAB 2011 VPe TECHNOLOGY FOR HD RADIO

VPe combines a new crest factor reduction scheme and real-time pre-correction circuitry.


Broadcast Electronics (BE) shows at NAB 2011 the latest advancement in HD Radio, its Vector Power Enhancement (VPe) technology.  This new technology improves transmitter efficiency and output for elevated HD Radio sideband power levels.        

 

BE’s VPe technology combines a new crest factor reduction scheme and real-time distortion pre-correction to yield higher transmitter efficiencies and provide another 30 percent output power. With this new technology, BE FMi tube and solid state transmitters for HD Radio will realize optimum linear performance affecting their power class rating, thereby reducing hardware cost, heat loss and overall cost of HD Radio adoption at higher -14 dBc or -10 dBc injection levels. 

 

VPe is available as a field upgrade and is backward compatible for current BE FXi exciter installations moving to the higher IBOC injection levels.  

 

“VPe is good news for the hundreds of stations currently using BE FMi transmitters that incorporate FXi 60 and FXi 250 exciters.  VPe is a cost-effective way to adopt the -14dBc and -10dBc elevated HD power levels,” said BE’s Vice President of Engineering Brian Lindemann. 

 

VPe uses a proprietary crest factor reduction scheme to reduce the peak-to-average ratio, and thereby increase transmitter performance. It also uses digital adaptive pre-distortion circuitry to pre-correct non-linear distortion in the RF transmission signal path.

 

Broadcasters can look for VPe to be available for BE’s FMi T Series and FMi solid-state transmitter lines in Summer 2011.  BE manufactures a full line of HD Radio products.
